Jimmy Chambers - You Can't Fight It /w Riccio Rerub (Fly By Night Music)

Jimmy Chambers: "For me this record has never been release before - the Riccio Rerub sounds so fresh! I nearly forget how good it was”

So, imagine Italian beatsmith par excellence Riccio sitting at home, watching the box, shooting the shit, when John Carpenter's classic  'Assault on Precinct 13' (1976) comes on. He sits up a little straighter as the movie gains momentum and quickly bins his idea of hitting the sack early for a change.  When the credits come rolling in 90 minutes later with the lead tune of the movie's soundtrack, Riccio pricks up his ears and does some late night research. He finds out it's Jimmy Chambers' 'You Can't Fight It' - a mean disco bomb with crazy bottom-end, growling, haunting synths and driving blaxploitation horns Carpenter himself penned down for the movie - a track that never saw a proper commercial release. Five minutes later Riccio whips out his credit card and forks out 50 bones for the one promo 7" copy of the single that's available on Discogs. We've all been there, it's that collector's itch, sometimes you just have to scratch it, even if it means cheap noodles and canned beer for a good week or two.

So, imagine Riccio sitting there a few days later, with his fresh, stupidly limited and stupidly overpriced 45 in hand, thinking he might as well have a go at reworking the track (blood still being thicker than water and all). He respectfully nips and tucks away and adds a bit of extra oomph to proceedings until he's happy with the results and ready to commit the edit to wax. However, around the same time the infamous Super Value Edits series Riccio was involved with comes to a sudden and grinding halt. With no outlet for it, the track ends up sitting on a harddrive, collecting digital dust for several years.

So, imagine Lorenzo, label boss of the classy Fly By Night Music imprint leisurely browsing Riccio's 'unreleased edits' folder on his old pal's harddrive one night and stumbling upon his version of 'You Can't Fight It' and being completely blown away. He manages to talk his friend into letting him release it, but decides to do the right thing and license the track from its rightful owner(s) so he can put out Riccio's version and give the original track the release it deserved all those years ago. What follows is an epic search for the copyright holder - a bit of an odyssee, if you will - involving bottles of wine as bribes, good old fashioned letters by snailmail and a sitdown with the manager of the aptly called 'Mystery Music Limited' company, before the deal is finally signed.

They say there's a great story behind every great record. While this may be a cliché that's so bland it's beige, it certainly holds true for Fly By Night Music's new 10" record, which comes with a lovingly remastered version of the original, Riccio's badass edit, a download code and an insert with background info on the release. It's stuff like, beautifully packaged and driven by an authentic passion for music by a producer and a label owner that seem to be kindred spirits, that makes collecting records so much fun.

FBNM have an exclusive presale package offer going on at the moment, limited to 40 copies plus an ultrafresh 'You Can't Fight It' tee (Gildan size S to XL) for 19 euros + P&P, which is a real steal if you ask us AND means you'll get your hands on the 10" before the genpop does.
