Ptaki - Antypody EP (People Must Jam)

Last weekend I had the pleasure of having a few beers and a chat with Scott from Shadeleaf (That Man Monkz) and at some point - after a bucketload of IPA, I might add - we discovered we both have a bit of a thing for 90s hiphop, don't rate DMX spitting rhymes about his bloody wiener and - a bit less off topic - both judge music (old stuff, new releases, demos, promos, the whole shebang) by two simple standards: 1) does it have proper machine soul and 2) would we stick it on if we were home alone and in a pensive mood, or - alternatively - be eager to stick it in the bag and bust it out in the club. We also established that there's either way too much inoffensive, middle of the road fodder committed to wax these days or that we're both miserable, picky buggers. Bith of both, most likely, which means only a handful of releases passes through the floodgates. Picking and choosing records for your collection is somewhere between like riding a bike and picking a wine. While the later is pretty obvious (you don't want shite wines in your collection do you), there's a lot of mediocre records & wines out there that will do the job. But you'd much rather have the primo bottles lining the walls of your dank musty wine cellar. The bike riding analogy isn't for everyone though I suppose, but I thought of how it related to myself and how you never forget how to ride a bike, and I'd like to think I never forget - or always know immediately perhaps I should say - what sounds good and what I like immediately when I hear it. Anyways might be a bit of a stretch, but what the hell.

Les Crocodiles - La Nuit Des Tropiques (Pleasure Unit)

The Keyboard Masher gang is behind both the label and the moniker here. Instead of remoulding disco obscurities like they do on KM Editions they're using Pleasure Unit as an outlet for original productions from the likes of Skatebard and Telephones at the deeper end of the house spectrum. La Nuit des tropiques is a real classy piano-driven heads down, lights out affair with a mad acidic bassline. It's one of those rare tunes with a timeless quality to it - I'm sure if you told someone this was made back in 1999, or 2004, there would be no eyebrows raised and no questions asked. If you were into Mark Seven's 'My Ceasar' 10" on People Must Jam this will be right up your alley.

Admin - Flute Loops EP (Boogie Cafe)

I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of unsolicited demos, mostly because listening to Siberian power tekno gets old really fast (particularly love the ones that come with a small note saying 'made these with you in mind', you hit play and it's all breakcore junk), but when Admin - a moniker Juno aptly described as perennially search engine unfriendly - got in touch with a bunch of new bits we knew right away we wanted to do a record with him. There something instantly likeable about his breezy, laisser-faire take on disco. Admin's tunes really stand out in the overpopulated and very beige disco edit crowd. They're rough around the edges and will make audiophile hipsters with an overpriced Rega pull their hair out with all thr pops, clicks, crackle and small imperfections but they also offer pure and unadulterated dancefloor fun.

V.A. - Tony Travolta 002

More beatdown badassery to sink your teeth in after that killer Hamo 12" we posted about a few days ago. Here we have the second release on Damiano Von Erckert's Tony Travolta Records featuring a plethora of rather in-demand producers like Glenn Astro, Hodini and Tito Wun. It's actually been out for a good while but A) we were late to the party B) it's a bit of a who's who of the German beatdown scene and C) the label is called friggin' Tony Travolta, how rad is that?

I just read an interview in FACT magazine with Venetian Snares and he was fulminating against the pointlessness of journos describing the sounds and elements of tracks in music reviews when samples of said track are only a mouseclick away. I obviously don't consider myself a proper journalists and I don't particularly care for Venetian Snares' music but his plead to just focus on how a piece of music makes you feel instead of going on about the sounds that were used making the track …

YSE Saint Laur'Ant - Stonewall EP (Vinyl Only)

YSE Saint Laur'Ant launches his new imprint 'Vinyl Only' with a foursome of obscure disco delights. I've been following Ant (of Rhythm Plate and YSE fame) long enough to expect the label's name to end up being a bit of a pisstake (he's always been one for cheeky puns now hasn't he?). I've also come to expect nothing but exceptional gear from the Matlock native and Whiskey Disco regular, and he sure is on point here. If you liked his contribution to the 12" on Popular People's Front Limited from a few years ago - and I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't, it's badass - the A2 and B2 should be tickling ye ole musical nutsack so to speak. The A2 is a chugging downtempo rewire straight from a sandy Kashbah, while It Beats The Music on the flip rides a dubbier, wobblier, wonkier wave. Both are delightful curveballs to spice up your warmup sets.

Hamo - Cotton Club EP (Splendor & Squalour)

Massive sophomore effort on Splendor & Squalour, the imprint Brame & Hamo have been running since the pair moved to Berlin. Hamo's flying solo and letting his love for hiphop fully shine through on 'The Cotton Club' EP. And while fusing square MPC beats, rimshots and hiphop antics with dusty deephouse seems to be the hip thing to do these days (I always wonder if there's memos and TPS reports going round in 'the industry'), Brame & Hamo were championing this vibe alongside contemporaries like Graef and Hodini way before the hipsters and copycats cottoned on. I went to see them play in Amsterdam a while ago and they dropped some killer vintage hiphop (think 90's Tribe) mid-set; these dudes are the real deal.

The Cotton Club is a pearl of an EP too, arguably Hamo's best work to date. The dusty title track on the A with its driving snare, dusty rhodes, mellow guitar strumming and moody strings is killer club fodder that will find its way into …

Jori Hulkkonen - Something Left To Learn (Fly By Night Music)

Following on the success of the killer Jimmy Chambers release we covered last year, Fly By Night are putting out another limited package that should have the collectors rolling around like kittens in catnip: a limited, green 12" by Jori Hulkkonen in a full-colour sleeve, pattern-printed inner and a high quality tee with the same dotted pattern. The last thing I heard from Hulkkonen was his seminal 'When nobody's watching, we are invisible' LP from aeons ago, so I was surprised to see his name pop up on FBNM and asked label boss Lorenzo how the release came about, and guess what? Hulkkonen ordered the Jimmy Chambers package on the FBNM bandcamp page. Imagine Lorenzo sitting behind his computer screen thinking '..wait, what? I know that guy!'. The two got chatting about music and the rest - as the cliche goes - is history.
