Jori Hulkkonen - Something Left To Learn (Fly By Night Music)

Following on the success of the killer Jimmy Chambers release we covered last year, Fly By Night are putting out another limited package that should have the collectors rolling around like kittens in catnip: a limited, green 12" by Jori Hulkkonen in a full-colour sleeve, pattern-printed inner and a high quality tee with the same dotted pattern. The last thing I heard from Hulkkonen was his seminal 'When nobody's watching, we are invisible' LP from aeons ago, so I was surprised to see his name pop up on FBNM and asked label boss Lorenzo how the release came about, and guess what? Hulkkonen ordered the Jimmy Chambers package on the FBNM bandcamp page. Imagine Lorenzo sitting behind his computer screen thinking '..wait, what? I know that guy!'. The two got chatting about music and the rest - as the cliche goes - is history.

The tracks on offer are just as wonderful as the story that led to the release. 'Something Left To Learn' on the A is the kind of stuff you'd expect people to lose their marbles to at Burning man. Imagine throwing some moody adriatic soundscapes in the blender, adding some Italo drums, yearning vocals and Terje-style arpeggios and you get the idea right? Balearo-techno of the highest order. It reminds me of Pachanga Boys' remix of Jagwar Ma's 'Come What Save Me', another one of those tracks that seems purpose-built for mean and massive soundsystems in the desert. Danny Wang and J.E.E.P. rewire the original on the B and turn it into a proper driving basement weapon with a MONSTER bassline, crisp claps and killer percussion. One of the best things Wang has done post-Metro Area if you ask me. Did you like Payfone's Paradise on Golf Channel? Then you're you're going to lap this up.

Hulkkonen flexes his techno muscle on Distant Cities, a square and snappy affair with strong Italo influences. It's a bit too fast for me to play but I can easily see this going off properly in a large club.

Get the record directly from the FBNM Bandcamp page now for only 15 quid including that wicked tee, a real steal if you ask me. Special stuff as always from our pals and their nocturnal inflight entertainment delights.
